See the Unused Vibranium Mines of "Avengers: Age of Ultron" in Concept Art by Pete Thompson

The Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
Check out The Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) concept art by Pete Thompson!

In the Avengers sequel, there were several references to Vibranium and Wakanda. Wakanda is the fictional African nation, ruled by the Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), that mines the super metal Vibranium. While the Vibranium mines were never shown on-screen, concept art shows that scenes in the Wakandan mine were planned.

Pete Thompson is a professional concept artist who's worked on big budget movies like Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Thor: The Dark World (2013) and the upcoming Doctor Strange (2016).

In the film the villainous artificial intelligence Ultron (James Spader) seeks Vibranium and goes to a South African shipping yard run by Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis). Apparently director Joss Whedon was planning to have some scenes set in the underground African Vibranium mines. You can see Ultron collecting Vibranium, so this could also have been an alternate take of the Vibranium processing plant.

Wakanda was first shown in the comic book Fantastic Four #52 (1966) and is ruled by T'Challa aka Black Panther. Wakanda has the largest stores of Vibranium on Earth because of a massive meteor strike 10,000 years ago. Vibranium absorbs vibrations like sound and kinetic energy and is hard to break. The shield used by Captain America (Chris Evans) has Vibranium in it.

T'Challa is going to make his first onscreen appearance in the upcoming Captain America: Civil War (2016). But maybe he was supposed to show up earlier?

Here's some more great concept art from the film.
